Carol Noonan seems to exist beyond time...Noonan has forged a distinctive, dreamy, style, that is as breathtaking as her rich alto voice. She sounds at times like a 90's Sandy Denny, soaring into the heavens even as she hits you in the heart.
-Steve morse, Boston Globe

"Carol Noonan's voice has an inescapable hint of sorrow that permeates the eleven songs on her album, and that hint is precisely what makes this album such a cathartic work. Five songs are her own. Four more are traditional. Richard Thompson's 'Devonside' and R. Hayes' 'Sonny' complete the set. Carol's writing is quite fine. 'Just Because,' a song about loss, and the murder ballad 'Leather Gloves' are exceptional. The traditionals include 'Open The Door,' 'Unquiet Grave,' the mournful 'John Riley,' with its happy O Henry twist ending, and the mystical 'Lagan Love.' The album is beautifully performed, a truly haunting experience." ‹ Michael Tearson, Sing Out Volume 44#4

Noonan's voice fills these songs with emotion...The creative flame burns so brightly here she's gotta be on the right track. -Performing songwriter

PLAYBOY REVIEW, AUGUST 2000
By Charles M. Young
Carol Noonan respects all the right traditions of English and Irish folk music, with her soulful quaver, reminiscent of Sandy Denny or Jacqui McShee of Pentangle. On "Carol Noonan", she sings exclusively about loss; loss of love, loss of friends and relatives, loss of life. When love presents itself, it's a trap, and then it's gone. Is it bleak? Yes. Is it depressing? No. Her beautiful voice offers the consolation music is supposed to provide. Noonan has some fine backup musicians here, too-the cello and viola are especially apt with her dreamy voice. The music business doesn't know how to market stuff like this, so Noonan markets herself. If you want to buy her cd, dial up carolnoonanmusic.com or 877-GET-MYCD, and Carol Noonan will get all the money, which she deserves.

Noonan's voice has an alluring Dronal feel. Her mostly somber originals become transporting, even elegant. Her sustained notes open gorgeously like a young Joan Baez.

Brilliant modern folk singer...

Completely captivating and irrisistibly compelling, Noonan's newest may be the first true folk masterpeice of the new millenium.

The five original songs are the highlights of the recording and give good insight into the state of Noonan's mind when she wrote them. Songs like "Lost Soul," "Wasted Years," and "Stronger Than Me," are powerful statements of a person struggling to overcome the problems that confronted her (and succeeding). Noonan pours herself into them with some of the best singing she's ever done.

Noonan has always liked singing traditional songs, and here she has recorder four of them: the atmospheric "Open the Door," "Unquiet Grave," "John Riley," and "Lagan Love." Her own song, "Leather Glove," about a woman trapped in an abusive relationship, is written in traditional style. She does a lovely cover of Richard Thompson's "Devonside."
...Certainly one of the most personal and moving recordings of the year. Highly recommended.
